Howard Cockburn
VIC
Howard began calling in 1980, soon after taking up square dancing.
With Brenda, he opened Crossroad Squares in 1982, running it for over two decades and guiding more than 16 beginner classes while raising their two children.
In 1990 they launched Southern Cross Plus, followed by Southern Cross A in 1998.
Howard joined the Victorian Callers’ Association in 1982 and has served in every executive role, currently as Secretary.
He has been active on the Skills and Development Committee, a founding member of the Accreditation Board, and helped establish the annual VCA Variety Night, raising funds for charity.
He has managed programs for four VSDA State Conventions and trained many callers in technique and presentation.
In 1991 Howard joined the Australian Callers Federation, serving as President (1995–1998), Callerlink editor (1992–1997), Treasurer (1998–2001), State Coordinator, and now a National Conventions Board member.
He initiated the ACF Get Together, fostering caller development and camaraderie.
Howard has attended nearly every National Convention since 1981, serving in roles from Publicity Officer to Convenor.
A strong advocate of practical caller training, he has entertained dancers across Australia and New Zealand.
Beyond square dancing, he enjoys cricket, trivia, statistics, conversation, and time with family.
