At 15, I lost a football bet and had to attend my first Square Dance, a twist of fate that launched a lifelong passion.

 I’ve now been Club Calling for nearly 50 years, celebrating that milestone in 2018 alongside dear friends Steve Turner and Nev McLachlan.

Square Dancing has taken me across Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, Malaysia, and Mauritius, where I’ve met some of the kindest people imaginable.

My first club, Sundowners, welcomed me from its opening night until it closed 38 years later. For the past 39 years, I’ve been the Caller at Happy Wanderers, a role I initially accepted “just for one week” until a permanent Caller was found.
That one week has turned into the longest “One Night Show” I could ever imagine.

Beyond calling, I’ve been honored to serve as Best Man, Groomsman, Godfather, MC, Pallbearer, and Elegy reader, even singing the National Anthem on occasion. Being affectionately called “Uncle Kev” by so many in the Square Dance community is one of my greatest joys.

What began as a lost bet has become a journey filled with friendship, laughter, and gratitude. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, and I hope every bet I lose turns out this wonderfully.
