New South Wales – Awarded in 1993
Kit started square dancing in February 1951 after enjoying several evenings where square dancing had been taught. Kit and her husband, Laurie decided to start the Dozey Doe club at Dundas Town Hall with Arthur Downs as their caller.
At this time Arthur knew only eight movements. Over the years callers included Allen Blackwall, Harry Jackson, Bev Pickworth, Gary Cohen and Ron Jones.
In 1952 Bill and Dorrie Rolph started the Belmore Bells Club.
All the dancers from the Dozey Doe club attended the first night and continued to dance there for many more decades.
Kit and Laurie joined the NSW Square Dance Society and attended their first meeting at Homebush. The NSW Society held many dance nights entertaining American Square Dance
groups at Father O’Reilly’s Hall. By this time square dancing had grown and was very popular.
Laurie was the NSW President for a time and the society ran the competitions. Bundanoon weekend was very popular.
Kit and Laurie worked as adjudicators. They both held many positions in the NSW Society. Kit’s last position was Country Vice-President. Laurie was the convenor of the 6th National at Cronulla and they both worked on many state and national conventions in varied positions-conducting sewing seminars, painting decorations etc.
